Using traditional Cherokee designs for inspiration, students will create different patterns on the sides of this deep, square-to-round basket by combining various colors and widths of dyed flat reed. Emphasis will be on hand shaping the basket as you weave. This useful basket in completed with sturdy half-round rims and double lashing (lashing may need to be completed after class.) |

Dianne Stanton: Rippled Elm Bark Basket

| Description: |
This fascinating basket is woven with prepared inner elm bark. Students begin by weaving a simple twill base. The sides are woven in a Native American technique of "between-weave twining," a combination of plaiting and twining. Harvest and preparation of elm bark will be discussed as well as learning how to make elm bark cordage. Your basket can be completed with rippled or round rims. |

| Description: |
Inspired by the "fancy" baskets of the Northeastern US American Indians, this elegant black ash and sweet grass basket is covered with "porcupine" curls. After setting up a double-bottomed base with tapered spokes, students will learn free hand shaping with graduated, prepared weavers and how to create the double-twisted porcupine curls. Your basket is completed with a black ash and sweet grass rim. |
