Dianne Stanton: Black Ash Shaker Cheese Basket

Dianne Stanton's Black Ash Shaker Cheese Basket
Description: In this class, students will actually weave two baskets. Your first "practice" basket will be made from flat reed to learn the hexagonal plaiting technique. The second basket will be made from prepared black ash. The bases will be woven fom the center out on a specially marked board and the techniques you learn in the base will be repeated on the sides of these classic round baskets. Your handsome black ash basket will be completed with hardwood rims and double lashing. Large antique baskets of this type were lined with cheesecloth and used as a colander to drain curds during cheese making. Materials include flat and flat-oval reed, black ash spokes and weavers and hardwood rims.
