Starved Rock Weaving Day

Event:   Starved Rock Weave
Date:   June 12th, 2006
Location:   Starved Rock Lodge, Utica, IL

June is just around the corner and for LLBWA weavers, that means a Monday at Starved Rock. A recent change in plans has resulted in a basket change as well. The Starved Rock Basket for 2006 is "Gardener's Delight" created by LLBWA's own Patty Shaffer. Patty said she initially wove this basket for a friend and collegue in Bangor, Maine. The friend is an avid gardener and loves to cut fresh flowers. She wanted a basket that would look nice displayed in the house but would also be functional in bringing in cut flowers, herbs or summer vegetables. The basket is woven on a wooden base with an attached rectangular hoop handle. It is simple in design, yet the arrow pattern, changes in reed sizes and sloping rim give it texture and charm.

You may choose to weave "Gardener's Delight" or bring a project of your own to work on. You may purchase a complete kit, or a handle/base & tie-on and supply your own weaving materials. The cost of the complete kit is $30, the handle/base is $16 & the tie-on of garden tools is $4. A pattern is included in your registration fee.

If you choose to bring your own weaving supplies, you will need:

  • 7mm flat oval - 48 10" spokes. prescarfing one end will save time
  • #1 round reed - 2 to 3 long pieces, about 5 yds total
  • #2 round reed - 9 to 10 pieces longer than 3 yds each for twining base & arrows
  • 3/16" flat oval - 12 long pieces about 50" each, 1 lasher about 3.5 yds
  • 1/4" flat - 5.5 yds PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A CORRECTION< NOT FLAT OVAL
  • #3 sea grass - 50" for the rim filler
  • 1/2" flat oval - about 3 yds for rims

Special tools that will be helpful:

a knife or shaver to scarf spokes, glue if you prefer to glue spokes to the base and cable ties for rimming. ( they really make it easier with this sloping rim.)

The day will begin at 8:30 AM, with registration and a continental breakfast served until 10 AM when weaving will officially begin.

Lunch wil be served in the Great Room adjacent to the weaving room. Please indicate your choice of lunch entree on the registration form. This year, due to many requests, it will be possible to order a hot entree - Chicken Parmesan with fettuccini, or a sandwich on a Kaiser roll & choice of turkey, ham, beef or chicken salad. Both will include a salad and coffee or iced tea. Following lunch there will be a short business meeting, then plenty of time to finish your basket or walk around Starved Rock Park. Don't forget to bring something for the "Show and Share" table so we can see what creations you have been working on.

Registration fee is $30 without the kit and is due by May 15th, 2006.
